Gavin vs. the Tickle Monster

We wondered for the longest time where Gavin learned to growl...
We now blame the Tickle Monster.
(PS - How stinkin' CUTE is that laugh?!)

My Most Expensive Hobby

A few years ago, my friend Morgan had her first baby (Emrie).  Rather than hire a professional photographer to take monthly/milestone photos of her little girl, Morgan bought a DSLR and had her brother and sister-in-law (who have their own photography business) teach her some tricks of the trade.  It was amazing to see how great her photos were from the very start -- but more than that, she seemed to be having so much FUN setting up these various photo sessions for her beautiful daughter.  I started to think that learning photography might be something I'd want to do when Stephen and I decided to start our family.

Flash forward a year and Stephen and I found out we were pregnant.  He was really wanting a nice, handheld video camera to capture moments like first steps -- but I was still pretty set on getting a nice DSLR (with video capabilities, of course).  Still, when a baby is on the way, you always have somewhere else to put the money.  For us, it seemed more important to buy a crib...a dresser...mounds and mounds of adorable baby clothes...  I was pretty disappointed, but we both understood that it didn't make sense to spend a ton of money replacing our point-and-shoot when we had ACTUAL necessities to buy.

Then my sister-in-law, Erin, bought her DSLR and started taking some beautiful photos.  I mean, really beautiful.  She's an optometrist, so the optical aspect of photography really makes sense to her, and she spent tons of time reading up on how to take the best photographs.  When Doug and Mindy welcomed Quinn in November, Erin took some photos of the new family that so perfectly captured the moment -- and I knew then that I really wanted to be able to do that with my own family.  (As a sidenote, Erin and Ken just came back from a trip to Rome and Amalfi and Erin's pictures are AMAZING.  She took one of the Sistine Chapel that is literally breathtaking.)

We got our Canon T3i for the December holidays and, thanks to a crash course from Erin, I started to navigate through the various camera settings.  We still had newborn photos taken of Gavin -- and actually just went back for six month photos -- but I've taken what seems like thousands of photos of my favorite little one in between those times.  It's something I really enjoy and something I really want to excel in.  It's been fun to see how I've grown as a photographer as the months have passed...Gavin's most recent photos, his seven month portraits, are some of my favorites.  It also helps that Gavin is a HUGE HAM in front of the camera.  That's what happens when you have a lens in your face from the moment you're born!  :)

So, like I said, I've taken thousands of photos.  I'm obsessed.  As such, I've been posting tons of photos on Facebook for friends and family, particularly those who haven't gotten the chance to meet Gavin yet.  We do a lot of fun things, so there are always opportunities to take pictures.  The thing is, I'm fairly sure that my friends without kids don't really care about our latest trip to the Cincinnati Zoo, so I've decided that instead of crowding their newsfeeds with more photos of Gavin feeding the giraffes, I'll post them HERE.  I like sharing my pictures, and I've had a lot people say they enjoy keeping up on how Gavin's growing, so I think this might be a more appropriate forum for that.  That way, I can reserve Facebook for complaints about the weather and birthday notifications.

Anyway, for those of you who are new to this blog, thanks for following and I'll do my best to post photos of my cutie pie son as often as I can!

The Best Part of Motherhood

I am often asked by friends without children what the best part of motherhood has been.  I spent a majority of Gavin's first few months with us lamenting the colic, the lack of sleep, the perpetual spit-up, but truly, there is nothing I enjoy more than being Gavin's mommy.  I am constantly amazed by the power of my love for such a little boy.  And so THESE are the best parts of motherhood, the reasons to fight through sleepless nights and sometimes-tearful days:

- Nothing, literally nothing, beats walking into your baby's room in the morning and seeing his big smile.  It feels AMAZING to feel that sense of recognition and excitement.  Gavin is his happiest when he first wakes up in the morning or from one of his naps, and my favorite moments are spent cuddling with him as he stretches and slowly wakes.

- Smiles are wonderful...belly laughs are better!  Gavin started belly laughing -- really just going at it -- when he was around three months old.  He laughs at the cats, he laughs in the bath, he laughs when he's tickled, he laughs just because...  His laugh brightens my whole world.

- That moment before he falls asleep, when he's just sucking on his binky and grabbing onto my finger, calms me more than anything else can.  It reminds me that no matter how big he's getting, he's still my little angel baby.  The more independent he gets, the more bittersweet this whole "growing up" thing becomes -- but that moment where I can look down in my arms and see my tiny sweetheart fading into sleep makes me feel as though he'll always need me.

- Seeing things through the eyes of a baby is such a fun change of pace.  When we go to the zoo, we think about the things that Gavin might most enjoy (train rides, bubbles, exhibits that allow him to touch and feel various things).  When we plan out our weekend, we think of what might be fun for him (a park opening, a road trip to Indy, splashing in his baby pool).  We are doing things that we haven't done in years and relish in the look on our son's face as he experiences things for the first time.

- Watching the video monitor as he plays in his crib is particularly gratifying since he used to wake up several times in the middle of the night just wailing his little head off until we'd come and hold him.  Now he's learned to cuddle with his lovey, press his musical seahorse on and off, and talk to himself until Mommy or Daddy can come to get him.  It usually earns Stephen and I an extra half hour of sleep -- but really, it's pretty fun to stay awake and just watch Gavin make his own excitement.

- The way people react to Gavin has been really heartwarming.  He's a pretty happy baby, and a BIG flirt, so it's no surprise that he's a big hit anywhere we go -- but it's also nice to hear from others how well-behaved they think he is, how charming he is with his little dimples, etc...  Stephen and I are pretty obsessed with him, so it's neat to hear that it's not just parental bias.  :)

- Watching Gavin interact with other babies is one of my favorite things.  I totally understand why people have more than one child now.  He's just so CURIOUS about other babies.  We're not ready to expand our family quite yet (hey, we are JUST NOW starting to get some sleep) -- but I get why people do this more than once.

- The feeling that no one knows my child the way I do is pretty special.  I know what his different cries mean.  I know what to do when he starts pushing away his bottle.  I know how to soothe him to sleep when he's fighting a nap.  The best part of motherhood?  Knowing that I can make my child happy, keep him healthy, and make him feel 100% safe and loved in a way that no one else can.  (Stephen obviously achieves the same goals -- just in his own way.)

The list could go on and on, really.  Gavin is an incredible kid, and motherhood is a incredible job.  Right now, I'm sitting in bed watching trashy summertime television and praying Fourth of July fireworks don't wake my baby while watching Gavin on the monitor splayed out in his crib, lovey in hand.  He's my little angel and I'm blessed to be his mommy and to be able to share him with the world.

Like Father, Like Son

One of my favorite parts of being a mother is having the opportunity to do so with Stephen by my side. I always knew he would be a hands-on dad, but seeing the bond he has with Gavin has really made me love both Stephen and Gavin that much more.

Stephen went back to school last year, so in addition to working full-time, he is constantly busy with studying, homework, and class.  His time with Gavin is limited on school nights, so he learned to make the most of it early on by taking over Gavin's nighttime routine.  Gavin gets his bath, with plenty of time to splash around and play with toys, then dries off in his giraffe towel before getting his oily massage.  After a fresh diaper and jammies, G gets fed, put into his sleep sack, and read to.  Still awake, he gets a big kiss from Daddy and dozes off as his musical seahorse plays lullabies.  It's a pretty perfect routine, and one that has thankfully proven to help him sleep through the night.

The cutest thing is how SPECIFIC Stephen is about the whole process.  He chooses two toys for Gavin to play with in the bath each night, and he likes them to be different so that Gavin ends up playing with all of them at one point or another.  He makes sure the nursery fan is off so that G doesn't get chilled when he comes into the room naked, but always remembers to turn it on before shutting off the light.  Gavin has a specific lovey he uses for bedtime, and another one he uses for naps.  The thing I love most, though, is how much Stephen loves reading to Gavin.  To preface, we have two book bins for Gavin, one filled with board books and cloth books, and one filled with books from my elementary education days (which are probably more appropriate for ages 4+).  Stephen always ends his reading sessions with the board book "Goodnight Gorilla," but likes to start by reading either a Golden Book or something out of the big kid book bin.  If Gavin doesn't show enough interest, Stephen doesn't read the book again the next night.  If Gavin likes the book, he repeats it night after night until Gavin loses interest.  He has read "The Red Lemon" by Bob Staake maybe fifty times.  "The Red Lemon," meanwhile, is a book I used years ago to teach third grade students about consumerism...but he's convinced Gavin really enjoys the bright colors.  He probably does.  More importantly, though, Stephen has found a love for children's literature that makes me want to burst with excitement (since children's literature is one of my biggest passions).  We went to Joseph Beth yesterday afternoon, where Stephen promptly went up to the counter to ask where more books by Bob Staake were located.  As it turns out, he's only written one other book, an American History children's book about Obama's dog...but we are now the proud owners of "First Pup."

Anyway, the reason I bring this up is because when I first had Gavin, a lot of people told me stories about their husbands never changing diapers...never waking up in the night...never taking charge of bath time or mealtime or anything...telling me how lucky I was that Stephen was so hands-on.  And I am lucky, of course I am.  But I am also not surprised that Stephen is so involved.  That's the kind of man I married, the kind of partner-in-crime I wanted in parenthood.  And as I sit here listening to him on the baby monitor say goodnight to our son, I am absolutely sure that I picked the right man to start a family with.

Goodnight everyone!

And Six Months Later...

Well, hello again!  I know I fell off the face of the planet after Gavin was born, but rumor has it that's fairly common with new moms.  The good news is that I've spent the past six months caring for the most adorable, loving baby in the whole universe.  There is no bad news.  :)

As anyone who is even relatively close to me knows, the first few months of parenthood were no cakewalk in the Dowd household.  After finally kicking a bad case of baby acne, Gavin developed a case of colic that kept him screaming from around 6:30 pm until he finally fell asleep around 9:00.  There was no rhyme or reason for it, and there was no solution.  This lasted for two months (though it felt more like two years).  Apparently moms who suffer from migraines have a 40% higher chances of having colicky babies, so this is something I can also look forward to with subsequent children, haha.  Anyway, Gavin outgrew the colic around four months but still refused to sleep through the night, often waking every single hour for some Mommy or Daddy cuddles.  We knew something had to change, so about a month ago (after a lot of back-and-forth feelings and several phone calls to the pediatrician) we used the Ferber method to sleep train him...and it WORKED!  We had one rough night, but by the second night we were already getting longer stretches of sleep, and by the third night we actually had to wake HIM up!  We still have a rough night here or there, but we now have a baby who puts himself to sleep in his crib (without needing to be rocked) and actually STAYS asleep!  Last night he went to bed at 8:30, woke up for a bottle at 5:45, and went back to bed until 8:30.  This has literally changed our lives.  Gavin is happier, we are more well-rested, and there is more time in the day to take care of things around the house and update this lovely family blog.

I will try and do a better job of updating more frequently, particularly now that Gavin is undergoing big changes on what seems to be an everyday basis!  He's rolling both ways with ease, sitting up on his own, interacting with toys, and giggling up a storm.  His smile also seems to be changing as his teeth come in.  He's always had a cutie pie little smile, but I especially love how he crinkles his nose now when he gets excited.

He has so much personality and LOVES to use those dimples to flirt with any and everyone who crosses his path.  I can't get enough of him.

Gavin is at the age where things are starting to get a little bittersweet.  Our little boy no longer needs to be cradled when we carry him...he fits nicely on our hips.  He likes to hold his own bottle while he eats. His little coos and gurgles are now full blown baby conversations.  We're looking into getting an upright carseat because if Gavin grows just one more inch, his current carseat will be too small.  His peach fuzz hair now needs combing every morning.  Our tiny baby is becoming a little boy, and even though I wouldn't change the stage he's at now for anything, I do look at pictures of him a few months ago and feel a twinge of sadness that those moments have passed.

So there's the shortened version of where I've been for the past six months.  Father's Day is tomorrow and Gavin and I are planning to take his daddy to the aquarium or zoo to celebrate, depending on what the weather is like.  Maybe we'll get some Orange Leaf afterwards?  Gavin LOVES Orange Leaf.  :)

Until next time...

We Did It!

We had the baby!  Well...four weeks ago we had the baby.  But since then, it's been such a crazy whirlwind that there has been no time to update this lovely blog.  As it is, our little munchkin is fast asleep in his carseat, Stephen is studying, and the cats are behaving themselves, so I figure now is as good a time as any to share the happy news that Gavin Robert Dowd came into the world on Saturday, December 3, at 1:15 in the morning.  He weighed 8 pounds and 10 ounces and was 20" long -- big boy!  Stephen and I couldn't be happier...but we also couldn't be more exhausted, haha.  Having a winter baby is difficult because you can't get outside and play, so in addition to being tired, you also become a little stir crazy.  It doesn't help that it gets dark around 5:00 pm.  We've been functioning with the help of friends and family, and I've practically moved into my parents' house when Stephen is at school or work, but we're slowly getting used to our new life and new routine.

It's weird...three weeks ago we were pretty sure Gavin would be an only child.  I mean, how could people go through this more than once?  But the other day I went to Buy Buy Baby to get some supplies and actually got jealous of all the adorable pregnant women there.  I ACTUALLY MISSED MY ENORMOUS 40+ WEEK PREGNANT BELLY.  It must be true...you DO forget the trials and tribulations of pregnancy/labor and delivery/those first few crazy weeks.  I was SO sore and SO uncomfortable and was sleeping SO horribly, and yet it all led to having our sweet little baby boy (who sometimes screams so much at night that I long for the days of my terrible pregnancy sleep cycle.)  I've had friends tell me that at around 9 months postpartum, when your baby finally is sleeping through the night in his own crib and life has settled into a nice pattern, you start craving another baby.  You miss your little one being teeny tiny and all of the excitement of pregnancy and having a newborn.  I have to say, I'm not sure I believe it...but at least I'm not swearing off of ever having a baby again.  :)

Stephen and I have learned a few things in our first month as parents -- things that people told us while I was pregnant but we didn't believe.
- You don't need thousands of little adorable baby outfits, especially in newborn size.  Gavin's newborn clothes are already packed away in the basement.  He wore each outfit exactly once.  We took photos, he looked precious, but now they are obsolete.
- Speaking of baby clothes, we wish we had more outfits with ZIPPERS and fewer outfits with SNAPS.  When you're trying to change a squirming, oftentimes screaming baby, it's nice to be able to do it QUICKLY.
- Go on dates if possible.  Our pediatrician told us this at our very first appointment, when Gavin was three days old.  Stephen and I have been lucky enough to go to dinner a few times, and to a Bengals game together.  It makes us feel a little more human -- and a little more like ourselves -- amidst all the drastic changes in our lives.  We always feel more refreshed afterwards, even if we've only gotten a few hours of sleep.  (It's also nice to be able to get outside for a few hours, which you typically can't do with a newborn during flu season.)
- That super expensive baby swing?  Chances are likely the baby will hate it.  That super expensive bassinet?  Chances are likely the baby will hate it.  You get the picture.

Maybe THAT is how people do this more than once.  You learn what works and what doesn't.  What needs to be purchased and what can wait until after the baby gets here.  What makes you feel better and what stresses you out more.

Or maybe they do it more than once because the babies are SO DARN CUTE.  :)

Happy December!

As predicted, the little bundle (who by now is most likely a BIG bundle) will be arriving as a December baby!  The funny thing is, I find myself way less anxious now than I did two or three weeks ago.  It's probably knowing that they won't let me go beyond 42 weeks (I'm 41 now), so there is a definite end in sight...and the end is measured in days, rather than weeks.

I think it also helps that I'm not working anymore.  My last day was November 23, but my maternity leave started on November 28 (after the Thanksgiving break), so I feel physically much better not spending entire days on my feet.  Would I rather be spending my maternity leave holding Gavin and watching movies with Stephen?  Of course.  But honestly, I've felt better this past week than I have in a long time, so it's worth it.

Tonight Stephen is taking me out for a surprise dinner date!  If you have to be huge as a house and questioning if your baby will EVER arrive...you might as well do it with a handsome man and a delicious meal.  :)

41 weeks and counting...
